Overview

The Grayling is predominantly a coastal species and is a master of camouflage becoming almost invisible when it rests with wings closed. It is found in very similar habitat to the Wall Brown, that is dry LIMESTONE GRASSLAND with bare stony patches around Morecambe bay becoming restricted to coastal dunes and heaths further north.


Where to look

Almost anywhere around the coast where there is suitable habitat, Drigg Dunes is a good place SD 050 985, look on bare sandy soil. It is also found at Whitbarrow Scar SD 442 871 and other areas of limestone grassland around Morecambe bay.


When to look

Look from early July to late August
