Overview

The Wall Brown is found in grassland habitats where there is bare ground or rock for basking. In Cumbria records are mainly from around the coast and on the thin limestone soils and outcrops of the Morecambe bay area. The butterfly has declined in the county over the last few years and this reflects the situation nationally.

Where to look

The Wall Brown is still relatively easy to see almost anywhere around the coast where there is suitable habitat. Limestone grassland with abundant bare rock and stony soil in places such as Whitbarrow Scar SD 442 871 are also likely places.

When to look

The butterfly is double brooded, the first brood is seen between mid May and mid June with the second brood on the wing from early August to early September
