Painted Lady

Overview
A large, summer migrant from North Africa that is a vigorous flyer and is usually seen skimming over grassland. Annual numbers are variable, some years almost none are seen whilst in others they are seen in abundance. It does not survive the British winter.
Where to look
Anywhere in flowery habitat in dry open places, heaths, dunes and limestone grassland. Also fond of garden plants notably buddleias.
